About TNSC

The Club

Sailing can be peaceful and relaxing or exciting and competitive - your decision. But let’s face reality - in today’s busy, everyday life, unlimited opportunities to spend time on the water do not exist for most of us.

True North Sailing Club has offered both relaxing and exciting sailing experiences at Canyon Ferry Lake for the last fourteen years.  For a yearly membership fee, TNSC provides the benefits of boat ownership without the hassle and at a fraction of the cost.

As a member the boats are in the docks and ready for you to use.  When you return from a day on the water, simply store any gear you used.  The boat stays in its club mooring and you are on your way to life's other demands.

The Investment & Benefits

To purchase, finance, moor, insure and maintain a boat for a dozen days or so of sailing each year is very expensive. TNSC membership cost is $800.   As a member you will receive the following benefits:

  • 10 guaranteed sailing days.  As the summer approaches, you will choose the days you wish to have a boat reserved for your use.  You are guaranteed ten sailing days each summer.

  • Unlimited use based on availability.  Anytime you wish to go for a sail you are welcome to call the club and reserve a boat.  If there is a boat available at the marina it is yours for the day.  While some members only use their ten guarenteed days, others have gone sailing several times a week all summer.  It is up to you.

  • Lessons to whatever level for sailing you wish.  Whether you want to learn the intricacies of racing or simply the sailing basics to enjoy a day on the water, members can set-up demos and lessons to help acheive their goals.  The club manager, John "Laurie" Simms has more than forty years experience in sailing, from construction to instruction, and his mission is to make you feel confident and comfortable on the water.

  • A copy of the book Basic Keelboat.  This text, published by US Sailing, is the primary instrucational sailing book in the United States.

  • Invitations to fun races and social events.  Several times each month, TNSC sponsors fun races and all members are welcome to attend.  These are fine opportunities to make new friends, eat good food and talk sailing with club members and other sailors in the marina.

Compare a TNSC membership with the cost of purchase and maintenance of a sailboat.

  •   $15,000 for new 18’ sailboat

  •   $700 for the mooring fee at marina

  •   $200 for yearly insurance

  •   $100s for yearly storage and launch fees

  •   $100s for regular maintenance

Sailing is the safest of all boating activities and the True North Sailing Club is a great way to get out on the water with the support to make every sailing experience enjoyable.

TNSC also provides sailing camp instruction for youth groups like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Please make inquiries for this service early in the year as available dates fill quickly.

The Marina

True North Sailing Club docks all our boats at Yacht Basin Marina on the west shore of beautiful Canyon Ferry Lake.  Yacht Basin is a family-friendly marina with a helpful and knowledgable staff.  There is a small store to purchase snacks and drinks.  In addition, the marina rents beaches and cabins during the summer months.

Canyon Ferry Lake is located just 15 miles from Helena.
